Hailey could feel his unshaven face. It pricked her, but she didn’t care. Kissing him was like nothing she had ever experienced, not even with Paul.

She heard the door fly open.

“Mom, I’m home,” Ella called out.

Hailey pushed Nick away. Oh, my! How long had she been in his embrace? She quickly stood. “Um...” she said.

“You aren’t running away from me, are you?” he said.

“No, it’s just Ella is home.”

“Are we still on for the next few days?”

Hailey started to pace. The room was spinning the same as her heart. She stopped and took a deep breath. It was just a kiss. No, it was way more than one kiss.

“Ella has a short day on Friday.”

“No worries. Why don’t we take her to the wave pool with us?”

“That would work,” she said.

He touched her arm. “Are you okay? Are we okay?”

His touch further unsettled her. Why did she kiss him? Things would be better if they remained friends. She pictured a countdown of the days he had left here in Utah.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I hope I didn’t ruin things between us. I like having you and Ella in my life, even Sparkle I don’t want things to be awkward between us.”

She nodded. They could say it was a mistake and go back to the way things were, but she doubted either of them would forget their kiss. How could she pretend nothing had happened?

“Mom,” Ella said, coming into the room with a huge grin. She stopped. “Nick!” She ran to him and threw her arms around him. “I’ve missed you. I’ve missed my fish.”

He laughed. “I’m sure it’s the fish.”

“You said you would help me with math.” She released him and put her hands on her hips. “Mom says you were too busy.”

He stared at Hailey as if waiting for her to explain.

“I made a mistake, sweetheart,” Hailey said. “You see, I didn’t have Nick’s number. Now I do. We just haven’t communicated in the last few days. He really did want to help you with math.”

“I did,” he said. “What about right now? Then you can finish naming your fish.”

“Don’t you mean your fish?” Ella asked.

“Between us, I think they like you a little bit more than me,” he said with a half-smile.

“Really?” Ella jumped up and down. “Do you think when you leave that I can have them?”

Hailey shook her head. “There’s no way. Now go wash your hands before your snack.” She stared at Nick. “Would you like something to eat?”

“That would be great,” he said. “Again, I apologize.”

Hailey glanced at Ella. “Let’s talk about it later.”

Only she didn’t want to talk about their relationship. She liked having Nick in their lives, and she didn’t want the next few months to be awkward. Why had she let her heart get the better of her? She’d just have to make sure she was never alone with him. She sighed. They were spending tomorrow together without Ella.
